I just finished Heenan's second book. Totally awesome stuff. I bought Chuck Palahniuk (the author of "Fight Club")'s book "Survivor" today. Just reading the blurb on the back made me wanna check it out...
Tender Branson -- last surviving member of the so-called Creedish Death Cult -- is dictating his life story into the flight recorder of Flight 2039, cruising on autopilot at 39,000 feet somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. He is all alone in the airplane, which will crash shortly into the vast Australian outback. But before it does, he will unfold the tale of his journey from an obedient Creedish child and humble domestic servant to an ultra-buffed, steroid- and collagen-packed media messiah. He'll reveal the truth of his tortured romance with the elusive and prescient Fertility Hollis, share his insight that "the only difference between suicide and martyrdom is press coverage," and deny responsibility for the Tender Branson Sensitive Materials Sanitary Landfill, a 20,000-acre respository for the nation's outdated pornography -- among other matters bizarre and trenchant.

Personally, I liked Pure Dynamite. I'm sure some were put off by the wrestling is real writing style, but hey, Dynamite was doing jackass stunts to people before any of those guys were born.

i saw mankind at the airport ,where i work, ran back to my locker to get my copy of his book for him to sign. he was reading a copy of dynamites book.i had heard it wasn't very good but we had a 5 min. discussion about it and i picked it up on his recommendation and found it very good. another wrestling book i liked was gary michael coppetta's. he was a wwf(?),wcw(?) anouncer and it's full of behind the scenes, locker room stories. i think it's still available on his website.

It is, I forgot to mention it in the last post. Definitely comes off bitter, and with good reason, but on the bright side he holds absolutely nothing back with regards to anyone. another wrestling book i liked was gary michael coppetta's. he was a wwf(?),wcw(?) anouncer and it's full of behind the scenes, locker room stories. i think it's still available on his website. He announced for both WWF and WCW. It's a good book if you like road stories. I'd put it in the same league as the Heenan book or Arn Anderson books, good quick reads but nothing historically significant in there.

Has anybody read that one book Choke Hold? I've heard it has some reeeally incriminating stuff in it, like ten times worse than the coke/steroid stories of Sex Lies & Headlocks.
I read Heenan's first book. I enjoyed it, but I'm a huge Heenan mark. I love stories and stuff like that (a la shoot interviews). His second book is described by him as a self-help book, but it's just a way to set up him telling all these stories.
I really wanna check out Thesz and Ole's books. Jimmy Hart has a book coming out next month I think.

Yeah, that's the Jim Wilson book I was referring too. Whoever you heard that from may have exaggerated a little. It DOES have incriminating stuff in there, some stories of drug use, homosexuality, sexual harassment. But it's not as sensationalistic as what's in "Sex, Lies & Headlocks". The real incriminating stories (and you have to take them with a grain of salt) are discussions of the politics and monopolistic practices of the NWA during that time frame.

Chokehold was good, and did have a lot of "dirt" as far as what went on back then, but you have to question as to just how far the slant is considering who wrote it.
Wilson is a very, very bitter man who is said to have failed in the business for reasons that he just won't admit: that he stunk. His bitterness comes across greatly.
It still doesn't take away from it being a good book, it was, just obviously biased.

I've seen 2 of his matches, both of which were pretty terrible given the standards of the day. Those that have seen a lot of his work echo the same thoughts. I'd say the best reason to read the book is to get an insight on just how the NWA was operating at that point.
